La Salette Reflection – Gaudete Sunday – 3rd Sunday of Advent

Mission of Joy (3rd Sunday of Advent: Zephaniah 3:14-18; Philippians 4:4-7; Luke 3:10-18) Today is Gaudete (Rejoice) Sunday, so we are not surprised to hear Zephaniah telling Jerusalem, and Paul the Philippians, to rejoice. Both are beyond enthusiastic! But someone else is rejoicing, too. Look at the end of the first…

La Salette Reflection – 2nd Sunday of Advent Dec. 5th, 2021

From Misery to Glory (2nd Sunday of Advent: Baruch 5:1-9; Philippians 1:4-6, 8-11; Luke 3:1-6) The opening of today’s text from Baruch is wonderful: “Jerusalem, take off your robe of mourning and misery; put on the splendor of glory from God forever.” In fact, the entire reading brims over with hope…

La Salette Reflection – 33rd Sunday Ordinary Time

Gathered in Hope (33rd Ordinary Sunday: Daniel 12:1-3; Hebrews 10:11-18; Mark 13:24-32) Today, Daniel prophesies “a time unsurpassed in distress since nations began.” Jesus describes alarming signs preceding the end-time. We may be tempted to draw a correlation between these readings and our own time. If so, we wouldn’t be the…

La Salette Reflection – Feast of Christ the King of the Universe Nov. 21, 2021

King Forever (Christ the King: Daniel 7:13-14; Revelation 1:5-8; John 18:33-37) Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet; Omega is the last. In the New Testament (written in Greek), they appear only in Revelation, always together, four times, on the lips of Jesus who says, “I am Alpha…

The Last Full Measure (32nd Ordinary Sunday: 1 Kings 17:10-16; Hebrews 9:24-28; Mark 12:38-44) “Here, my child, eat some bread while we still have it this year; because I don’t know who will eat any next year if the wheat keeps up like that.” When the Beautiful Lady reminded Maximin of…

#Synod on Synodality Sessions at La Salette Shrine of Enfield, NH The desire and eagerness to tell the story of our journey under the guidance of the Holy Spirit was truly evident at all three listening sessions. The sessions began with a short welcome and explanation followed by a gathering hymn and the prayer to the Holy Spirit for the Synod. Participants then separated into smaller groups and answered questions derived from the suggested synod focus questions. We ended with a closing prayer and short evaluation.SummaryOur relationship with the Church has changed from one based on obedience to one encouraging personal spirituality. While still finding joy in attending Mass and in the sacramental Church, we now also participate in ministries and function as ministers at Mass and in the community. There are opportunities to learn about the faith and live it more fully outside of Mass which gives our faith journey more meaning. The ability to fully experience our faith depends on Church leadership, and specifically our local priest. This results in a confusing relationship between the People of God and the Institutional Church. It is an unfortunate result of this variety in Catholic Church leadership that people who do wish to continue as part of a faith community move to other faith communities in which they feel welcome. In this way we are failing the young, the marginalized who long to be accepted, and the lost and disillusioned Catholics. The ability to listen is not apparent in all clergy. Rather than encourage us to use our gifts, some clergy separate themselves from the people by refusing to listen to what the community needs. However, the Holy Spirit has inspired the laity in small groups, ecumenical efforts, youth groups and other interpersonal relationships to do the work of the Church. Priests who engage with and listen to the members of the church increase the positive feeling in the church community. Conclusion The message and practice of Church leadership must be unified in order to guide us on our way to fulfillment of the Kingdom of God. By doing this we will be encouraged to evangelize and use the gifts God has given us to help each other on our way and achieve a deeper understanding of the message of the Gospel.
